Maximum Voltage & Great Sound Quality…

High performance car audio amplifiers love lots of signal voltage. This allows them to deliver optimum sound quality and maximum bass response. Unfortunately, many of today’s after market source units don’t output the optimum voltage levels these amplifier need. The AudioControl OVERDRIVE PLUS pre-amp line driver increases the line level signals from after…

This is a beautiful guitar amp from Fender which is completely hand wired and made to exacting specifications with the highest quality components. Although it’s expensive the amp oozes quality, refinement and taste from every direction and the sound is incredibly responsive to different playing attacks and dynamics. This makes it a dream for blues guitar players in particular. In this article we’ll take a closer look at what the Fender ‘57 Twin has to offer and give you something to dream about.

Fender does a wonderful job of replicating the 1955 – 1957 golden era of its amps with a low powered 5E8A circuit. This gives you an output of 40watts into 2 x 12 inch Alnico speakers. You’ll find the tones very harmonically rich and able to replicate every nuance of your pick attack, constantly rewarding your extra efforts with increased attack from the amp.

The amp is perfect for blues, rock and country playing and more than being just a clean amp, it will also overdrive at higher volumes to produce some amazingly harmonically rich distortion. If you are a good player and know how to vary your pick attack this amp is going to reward you all night with fantastic amounts of real expression right from the heart.

So where is all this power coming from? Well it has a pair of GT6L6-GE output tubes which are made in the U.S.A and the power supply is straight from Fenders ’50s dual rectifier arrangement which is not see a whole lot. It uses 5U4 rectifier tubes. This means that the sag from this amp is less than other Fender models.

In the preamp we have 4 high gain 12AX7 tubes which can be substituted for lower gain ones if you really want the authentic 50’s sound. The control panel includes 4 inputs (2 bright and 2 normal) along with treble, bass and a presence knob. The cabinet is beautifully made form solid pine and has a wonderfully warm tone. It’s covered in lacquered tweed with a vintage brown grill cloth.

Question about guitar distortion?

Many players (including myself) prefer the sound of distorted tube amp circuitry vs. transistor circuitry. I know the distortion is produced from the overdriven tubes, whether preamp or power amp, and adjusting the guitars volume as well as the amps volume (channel and master) will effect the distortion as well.

All this said, why then, do so many of us use distortion pedals? What exactly is the pedal doing? Is it increasing the gain of the guitar signal to overdrive the tubes, or is it processing a synthetic “distortion” tone?

Example: If a guitarist with a Marshall JCM 800 plays his guitar through its clean channel and steps on his distortion pedal, (lets say it’s a Boss OS-2) is he getting tube distortion (is the pedal now overdriving the tube by increasing the gain) or is he actually getting transistor distortion introduced into the signal via the pedals transistor circuitry?

Anyone? I’m interested in the basis for your answer as well. Thanks!

That’s a good question, I pondered the same thing a long time back. A distortion pedal does not overdrive the tubes of an amp; if this was the case then distortion pedals wouldn’t work with solid state amplifiers! And neither is it producing a ‘distortion tone’ so to speak. Rather, it is distorting the waveform that is being produced, and the resulting wave distortion creates the ‘fuzz’ that we now call ‘distortion’. Additionally, some do (as you say) increase the gain and then clip the waveform to reduce the overall volume, resulting in an altered waveform that emphasises certain tones and harmonics, though these are usually known as Overdrive pedals rather than distortion pedals (my preferred choice of pedal on top of a valve amp).

So in the case of your example, the guitarist is getting distortion introduced into the clean wave form via the pedal, which is either changing the wave form from one shape to another, or boosting and clipping it to produce an altered shape. Have a look at the following links if you want to know a bit more about distortion types and effects.
