Thinking of taking up the guitar? So what’s it going to be? Electric or acoustic guitar, or have you even given it any thought. If there’s one thing I’ve heard from every person who learns to play the guitar it’s that their fingers feel as if they’re about to fall off after a few days with an acoustic. Because of the thicker strings on an acoustic guitar, it’s also a lot rougher on our finger tips for the first few weeks. While your fingers will build up a resistance to this, those first few weeks of playing and practicing will be pain full. In contrast the gauge of sting on an electric guitar is quite a bit thinner, and while not as loud as an acoustic, when learning makes it a lot easier.
Don’t we all want to rock?
A lot of us that first pick up a guitar do so because we have a particular rock song in mind we’d love to be able to play. The sound you get with a distorted electric guitar is like no other, and because of this a lot of people learn to play this type before acoustic. The down side to this is that you do require and amp to get those great sounds, and this can cost more money up front.
How about electric guitar lessons?
Whether you’re learning to play electric or acoustic guitar lessons are very accessible. From online video lessons to dvds you can buy to learn from home the basic lessons you learn at the beginning are similar. It’s not until you decide where to branch out to later on down the road that you might decide to take special lead guitar lessons, or possibly expand into another area of the instrument all together.
Of course it all comes down to cost
Surprisingly when you learn to play it you don’t have to spend much more if any then someone buying an acoustic guitar. To get a good sounding acoustic it’s going to cost more then a basic electric, how ever to really take advantage of an electric guitar you’re going to want an amplifier. Look for beginner packs of amp, case, patch cable, and practice amp all in one at your local music store or online. This will be your best bet up front when you’re starting out to learn to play electric guitar.
