So you’ve been rocking out listening to Green Day and decided you want to learn guitar and start up your own band? Good for you! Guitar is actually one of the easiest instruments to get into. Sure, you’re not going to become the next Joe Satriani in one day, but by practicing for a couple weeks, even an absolute beginner can learn enough of the basics to play a lot of the popular rock songs out there. Your first step – learn the basic power chord.
The power chord is the absolute easiest chord to learn……but don’t underestimate its power (they don’t call it the “power chord” for nothing!). Consisting of only 2 notes, even somoene who has never touched a guitar can be playing it within a day. Just about any rock band you can think of uses power chords in their songs, so once you learn this you can be jamming along with your favorite tunes pretty quickly!
The form of the chord involves just 2 frets and 2 fingers. You want to put your index finger on the 6th string (that’s the thickest string), then skip one fret and put your ring finger on the 5th string (called a 6th string root chord if you want the technical term). For example, you have your index finger on the 6th string, fret 3, then skip a fret and put your ring finger on the 5th string, fret 5. Then you can slide up and play the same thing on frets 5 and 7, 6 and 8, 7 and 9, and so on. You can play this chord anywhere on the neck, just keep your fingers in that position and you can play a variety of chords.
Not to complicate things too much, but you can also play this chord on strings 5 and 4 (5th string root chord). Again, just keep your fingers in the same position, you’re just bumping the form up a string to play strings 5 and 4 instead of 6 and 5. Easy!
A great thing about this chord is that you can use it to figure out songs by ear. Just pop in your favorite CD, grab your guitar, then play along with the song and try to match the chords you hear using the power chord form. You’ll likely hear more complicated chords being played, but anything they play will have a power chord match that will “sound right” when you play it with the chord you’re listening to.
