Custom guitar question?
I am building a custom telecaster. Really i am buying the telecaster, and then am upgrading it with pickups, Gotoh tuners, and a pickguard. the question is: should I buy one of the older Fender Standard Telecasters, which I can get for 347 as a blemished red or 399 as a blue, OR am I better off paying more to buy one of the newer models, which I can get for 424 at Samash. I am not sure if it will matter because I am replacing most of the stock parts anyway, but any other opinions or suggestions would be appreciated.
so you’re not really building one, you’re upgrading an existing one
If that’s the case, you need to seriously consider what you want from the body and neck as those aren’t going to change.
What wood, what paintjob (unless maybe you’re going to have it repainted as well), things like that.
No need to worry about the electrics and metal parts though…
Personally I’d go for the Koa or Spalted Maple models, simply because they’re stunning.
Not the cheapest of course (though the Koa Telecaster is quite reasonably priced) but you get what you pay for.
