If you are just learning to play the guitar and you want to know some tips in buying your first guitar, it is important to keep in mind that the right instrument is something that will fit the music you want to play.Â
Expert guitarists would often say that no two guitars may sound alike – even they are both acoustic guitars. Probably because there are a lot of factors that make up the quality sound of the guitar. Aside from the shape and the materials, the craftsmanship is an important factor to consider when buying your first guitar.
Here is a simple guide on buying your first guitar that best suits for your guitar playing.
1. Know what you want.
You may be too excited to get your hands on your new instrument but before you shop, it is important to identify the style of music you want to play. Do you want to play rock? Do you want to play country? Or probably you want to play jazz or alternative? The musical style you want to venture is an important thing to consider when buying your first guitar.
2. Know what guitar type you are looking for.
Guitars can be acoustic, classical, electric or the acoustic/electric. The acoustic guitar is one of the most popular choices for those who are just starting out with their guitar lessons and even for those who are already experts. This type is also popular for those who want to sing and compose songs and great for pop, rock, folk and country music. Classical guitars look like the acoustic ones but if you take a closer look at the strings, they use nylon and not steel. This type usually fits classical music style. Electric guitars can also be used to play pop, blues, alternative, country, R&B, rock and many other styles but keep in mind that electric guitars need amplification, which makes them a little difficult to carry around.Â
3. Choosing the price range.Â
The best brands of guitar may be tempting but they can be very expensive. If you are starting out, you can always settle for something good but less expensive. When you eventually learn to master the skill and you know how to listen to a good guitar sound, then it could be the best time to get yourself that top of the line instrument.
4. Choose a size that fits you.
Like buying clothes, guitar should also look good on you. Avoid choosing an instrument that is too big or too small for your body. You may also want to check if the instrument is easy on your fingers especially if you have small hands.
5. Testing your first guitar.
One of the best tips in buying your first guitar, or even if it is not your first, is to test how it sounds. The craftsmanship of the guitar is always a factor in the quality of the sound it produces. Guitars that are mostly handcrafted are often the most expensive ones because they are also the ones that most likely have a quality sound. Even if you are choosing a less expensive one, you also have to check closely about how it is made and of course test its sound. If you are not yet familiar in distinguishing a good guitar sound, you may also want to have someone who has been into guitar playing to help you out with the choosing.Â
Buying your first guitar is fun and could be a lot easier if you indeed have someone who is expert on the instrument help you out. With the guitar on our hand now, you can then start to learn and enjoy playing the instrument.Â
