In front of me on my desk is a tasty little brochure promoting an auction hosted by Bonhams & Butterfields.
This firm is going to sell a lot of personal possessions of the popular actor and adventurer, Steve McQueen.
Included are various Indian motorcycles, a Â’57 blue and white Chevy pickup, and a Wells Fargo Master Card in the name, Steven T. McQueen.
There’s even a cool Winchester rifle, Model 1873, with deluxe lever action. For anyone who enjoyed McQueen in “Wanted: Dead or Alive,” the TV series that launched his star, that rifle is going to be a treasure, though it differs from the sawed-off piece bounty hunter McQueen wore as a sidearm in that show.
“What’s this guy’s magic?” you have to wonder as you see him in the B & B brochure strapping on a motorcycle racer’s helmet.
He was a tough guy, but quiet, and that combination continues to fascinate.
Compare him to Arnold the Terminator, another action hero. Arnold is big and loud, by comparison.
McQueen could seem scrawny. Actually, scrappy is closer to the mark.
Intense, driven, gritty, gutsy—these are adjectives that describe McQueen.
Reportedly, he grew up in orphanages and foster homes, so he always seemed like a character that was waiting for hell to break loose. But if it did you felt heÂ’d be the only guy in the room who could ride it out. HeÂ’d dust himself off and get on to the next thing, without looking back or muttering a complaint.
James Dean, a contemporary, got the death intended for McQueen. Dean cracked up his Porsche on a California highway, a daredevilÂ’s departure.
McQueen was ambushed by cancer.
But he fought to find a cure, speeding down Interstate 5 to bizarre Mexican clinics that dispensed oddball remedies.
In the end, it was a race he couldnÂ’t win.
